What is Asian Teak?

Asian Teak is a responsibly harvested tropical hardwood that is grown in Vietnam and Malaysia. It has a very high oil content which allows it to retain its beauty in the outdoors.

What is responsibly harvested?

Responsibly harvested means that when a tree is cut another one is planted. This ensures that ecosystems are not torn apart and the supply of lumber is secured for the future. In addition, the lumber used in our products comes from legal sources in Vietnam and Malaysia. Our manufacturer is certified with the verification, testing and certification company, SGS for the C.O.C. (Chain of Custody).

How does Asian Teak compare to Plantation Teak?

Asian Teak looks similar to teak. However it has a higher density than teak and it is stronger than teak. Asian Teak is known for its durability and its beauty.

How do I care for my Asian Teak Furniture

The warm reddish tones associated with Asian Teak are brought out with an initial oiling of vegetable oil (such as linseed or tung oil). Hardwood is resistant to decay and very suitable for outdoor furniture. To maintain the beautiful finish, please treat the surface of the wood with a hardwood oil. Apply the oil to dry wood repeatedly until the balau wood is saturated. Wipe off the excess with a clean dry towel. We recommend this treatment is repeated once a year before taking the furniture outdoors.

If you prefer, you can forgo oiling your furniture. The wood will take on a silver-gray patina. For maximum longevity we recommend that you use a hardwood sealer. This will help to preserve the moisture content of the wood; it will not affect the color.

Finally if you use your Asian Teak furniture indoors we recommend a light coat of oil before initial use.

Do I need to store my Asian Teak furniture?

If you live in a climate that experiences freezing temperatures it is recommended that you store your Asian Teak furniture before the first frost.
